UBBCP was awarded in 2008 a grassroot grant entitled, "Raising Pittsburgh's Black History Awareness through Literature" to create an intergenerational literacy project surrounding "The WPA History of the Negro in Pittsburgh," a historical non-fiction work edited by Laurence A. Glasco.  This award was 1 of 88 chosen for the Pittsburgh 250 Community Connections $1 Million Awards to Community Projects.  This project will contribute to the “Pride & Progress” of Southwestern Pennsylvania—the theme of Community Connections.
