Aurora Reading Club

Founded in 1894, the Aurora Reading Club in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, is one of the oldest African American women's reading clubs in the United States. Though established amid an oppressive social climate for black women, the club pursued a systematic course of study in literature, art and science. It fashioned a dream of self-help and community upliftment to ensure that none of its members were passive recipients of music or poetry.
